Did you know that Moldova is one of the smallest countries in Europe, but has an incredibly rich history? It was one of the first countries to adopt Christianity as its official religion in the 4th century.
We begin our adventure in the capital, Chisinau, with its beautiful tree-lined avenues and Soviet architecture. We then visited Orheiul Vechi, a monastic complex carved into a cliff dating back more than 2,000 years. We cannot miss the fortress city of Soroca and its medieval defense towers. Our itinerary also includes a visit to Tiraspol, the capital of Transnistria, an autonomous region that seems to have stopped in the USSR. Last but definitely not least is the Milestii Mici winery, which is a must-see attraction.
The local currency is the Moldovan Leu and the official language is Romanian, although Russian is also widely spoken. And the best news for us Brazilians: we don't need a visa to visit Moldova for up to 90 days!
Moldova is a parliamentary republic and has made steady progress towards a market economy. However, it is still one of the poorest countries in Europe, with agriculture and viticulture being the main sources of income.
