Mechinagar is a municipality in Jhapa district in Mechi zone, Nepal and is the main entry point from India on the eastern border of Nepal. The Nepal customs office is in Kakarvitta, a section of the municipality.



Mechinagar Municipality was created by the combination of the Dhulabari (Nepali: धुलाबारी) and Kakarbhitta Village Development Committee. The Municipality expanded its territory by adding VDCs in nearby Bahundangi, Duhagadhi, Jyamirgadhi & Dhaijan in 2073 BS (2017 AD). The population of the expanded city is 111,797 (as of 2011 Censius) and area of 192.85 km.



The city is in the easternmost part of Nepal. The city is the largest municipality in Jhapa district. The city has Arjundhara and Birtamod municipality in the western part, Buddha Shanti Gaupalika and Ilam district in the north, Bhadrapur, Mechi in the south and West Bengal, India in the east. Mechi River separates the city and Nepal from India.


Two main highways, Mahendra Highway & Mechi highway, run through the city. The city is Mechi North Zone's link to the rest of the nation. The nearest airport is Bhadrapur Airport, which is just attached to the southern part of the city. Daily 6-8 flights make to Kathmandu in two directions from the airport.


The city is mostly occupied by the Bramins & Chettris. The city also has notable number of inhabitants from Dhimals and Rajbansi. Marwari Community has the largest share in the city's commercial business.


The city's temperature reaches 40 degrees Celsius in summer and drops below 8 degrees in winter. The city is the summer city and winter is only for the four months (November to February).
