What to do in Jordan: Where the Bathrooms Can Surprise You!

Jordan, a small country in the Middle East, is known for the warm hospitality of its people, the stark beauty of its deserts and, of course, the bathrooms. Yes, you heard right! But before going into details, let's explore more about this enchanting place.

We begin our journey in vibrant Amman, the country's capital, full of contrasts between modernity and ancient history. We then travel to Petra, one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, carved into the rock more than 2000 years ago. Afterwards, we headed to the Wadi Rum desert, the setting for epic films and home to the Bedouins. We also visited the Dead Sea, where you can float effortlessly due to the high salinity of the water. And finally, we dive into the coral reefs of the Gulf of Aqaba.

The local currency is the Jordanian Dinar, and the official language is Arabic, but English is widely spoken in tourist areas. We Brazilians need a visa to enter the country, but this can be easily obtained upon arrival at the airport.

Politically, Jordan is a constitutional monarchy, with the king exercising broad powers. Despite being located in an unstable region, Jordan has remained stable and safe. Economically, the country has challenges, such as the lack of natural resources, but tourism has been a growing sector.

A trip to Jordan can cost between R$5,000 and R$10,000, depending on the type of accommodation and activities chosen.

Now, let's go to the bathroom! In many public bathrooms in Jordan, you will find two types of toilet: the western one, which we are used to, and the "squat toilet", which is basically a hole in the floor. This is a reflection of the diverse cultural influences that the country has received throughout history, the majority of countries in the Arab world have this type of toilet, as do many in Asia, but the interesting thing about Jordan is that sometimes you are in places very luxurious and come across this type of bathroom.

We were in Jordan twice, and the treatment we received there was incredible, both from the people and the establishments we ate and slept in. One wish we have is to visit Petra, which didn't fit into our itinerary when we were there, but we intend to to go back.

In conclusion, Jordan is a country that enchants with its rich history, stunning landscapes and the cordiality of its people. And even a simple bathroom can become a window into local culture.
