What to do in Guinea-Bissau

Located in West Africa, Guinea-Bissau is a country full of history and traditions. A former Portuguese colony, it achieved independence in 1973 and has a rich cultural and ethnic diversity.

If you are thinking about visiting Guinea-Bissau, we have five unmissable places to recommend: the lively capital Bissau, the stunning Orango Island, the Orango Islands National Park, the Dulombi National Park and the Cantanhez Natural Reserve.

The official currency is the CFA Franc, the spoken language is Portuguese and for us Brazilians, a visa is not required for stays of up to 90 days. We entered Guinea Bissau via Senegal via the land border.

Regarding the socioeconomic situation, Guinea-Bissau is one of the poorest countries in the world, with an economy based on agriculture. The political situation, unfortunately, is marked by instability and coups d'état.

Guinea-Bissau is a fascinating country with a unique cultural and historical richness. Here are some curiosities that highlight the uniqueness of this nation:

1. Bijagós Islands - UNESCO World Heritage Site**: This archipelago of 88 islands is famous for its almost intact matriarchal cultural traditions, resisting colonial influence. The Bijagó culture is led by women, who play central roles in the household, economy and laws

2. Unique Biodiversity: The Bolama archipelago, recognized by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve, has a unique biodiversity in the world and is especially important for the reproduction of the green turtle

3. Economy: Guinea-Bissau is the sixth largest exporter of cashew nuts in the world, in addition to exporting fish, shellfish, peanuts, palm seeds and wood.

4. Language: Although Portuguese is the official language, only 11% of the population uses it. The majority of the population speaks Creole and different regional dialects.

5. Music and Dance: Traditional music in Guinea-Bissau is gumbé, and carnival is one of the country's biggest cultural events, reflecting the diversity of its approximately 20 ethnicities.

6. History and Society: Guinean society is marked by deep social stratification and around 40 different dialects are spoken. The country does not have a single power plant, with electricity supplied by local generators for only a few hours a day.

7. Musique Traditionnelle: Musical traditions are transmitted orally, with each community and age group having their own songs and dances. Instruments such as the bloum-bloum and mandaga are used in musical styles such as brassa.

These curiosities highlight just a fraction of the rich cultural and historical tapestry of Guinea-Bissau, a country with a profound heritage that goes far beyond its modest geographic size.
