Iceland is a wonderful country to visit and one of the most unique trips when it comes to things to see and do! A first-time visit to Iceland is an exciting prospect, with lots to plan, see and don't forget to eat! The entire country is as diverse as you can imagine, with volcanic activity, thermal pools, dramatic landscapes and glaciers all within one beautiful country.
With so much to do, it can be quite difficult to narrow down a special number of the best things, especially if you have the time. Whether you have a few days, a week or even more - you should consider seeing some of these stunning sights which are within a 5 hour drive of Iceland's international airport, Keflavik and easily reached by main arterial roads.
We took a low cost Norwegian flight from Oslo to Reyjavik for R$195 each, the cool thing about the flight was that we saw the Norwegian Fjords from above, which was incredible.
We rented a car and drove 1100km in Iceland, unfortunately because we were traveling at 110km per hour and on Icelandic roads the speed is 90km, we were stopped and the joke ended up being R$1100.
Below is the generic itinerary we made, in addition to the points, there are also several mountains and waterfalls that we went to, but Google couldn't support so many beautiful points, so here are the main ones.
1.) Relax at the Blue Lagoon
Iceland is known around the world for its famous geothermal heated pools. Head to the Blue Lagoon (about a 10-minute drive from the airport) and spend a few hours relaxing in these hot pools. happiness!
If you arrive in winter, you can actually go to the Blue Lagoon and watch the sunrise, a magical experience worth doing!
2.) Eat typical Icelandic cuisine
Traditional Icelandic cuisine is somewhat unknown outside of Iceland, but that doesn't mean it's not tasty! Head to one of Reykjavik's delicious restaurants and try some local dishes like; Harðfiskur consisting of dried fish is a company favorite!
If you're feeling a little more adventurous, look into Svið for a roasted sheep's head.
3.) Drive the entire Golden Circle
One of Iceland's main routes, the Golden Circle covers some incredible spots you won't want to miss. Including the iconic Strokkur geyser (which erupts every few minutes) and Gullfoss, which is stunning in winter and summer.
The golden circle can take around 4-5 hours to complete.
4.) Visit the capital, Reykjavik
The capital of Iceland, Reykjavik is a place you'll probably spend a night or two. Head here on the weekends when the restaurants are full of live music, friendly locals and a wonderful atmosphere.
In the days, explore the city itself, visit the Hallgrímskirkja Cathedral or head to the Harpa concert hall, home to the national opera and symphony.
Before you travel: you didn't forget about travel insurance, right?
If you're so anxious that you forgot to take out travel insurance , don't worry, there's still time! Travel insurance , although not mandatory for entry into American soil, can be your best friend. This is because any medical care or emergency, no matter how simple it may be, has very high costs in the land of Uncle Sam. Insurance with good coverage prevents a huge headache (not to mention in your pocket) and also gives you that hand in case your suitcase being lost, for example. We suggest that you take out insurance that covers any type of incident on the spot! We at Ideias na Mala recommend and do not travel without insurance from Seguros Promo , a Brazilian company that works as an insurance comparator, seeking the best cost-benefits on the market without giving up excellent coverage! 5.) See Skógafoss Roar
Skógafoss is approximately 2 hours east of the airport, making it one of Iceland's best-known waterfalls to visit. Entrance is free to Skógafoss, and if you arrive early in the morning, or late afternoon, you'll notice the crowds dissipate, leaving the waterfall all to yourself!
6.) Explore the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon
Jökulsárlón glacier lake is probably the furthest east you'll travel out of all these places (about 5.5 hours from Keflavik airport), but it's worth seeing if you've made it as far as Vik. Head to Jökulsárlón and see the incredible landscape that surrounds this region. It really is an impressive sight.
7.) Feed a horse on the road
Horseback riding is a beautiful experience in Iceland, especially with the friendly Icelandic horses that are so full of glamour. We don't walk, but we feed.
8.) Walk behind a waterfall in Seljalandsfoss
The Seljalandsfoss waterfall is approximately a 10-minute drive from Skógafoss, so it's worth doing it at the same time. One of the best things about Seljalandsfoss is that you can actually walk behind the falls, which is amazing to do! When conditions get really risky the path behind the waterfall becomes closed - so don't be too disappointed, it's for your own safety.
9.) Enter an ice cave
Definitely the best thing to do in Iceland, Ice caves are rare phenomena that form naturally. The ice caves have long been under construction. Each fall, after spring meltwater begins to freeze, local guides in the region seek out new ice caves. This is why the location of the caves changes every year and each ice cave is unique and newly formed. The structure and condition of caves can vary greatly from year to year. We paid 180 euros per person, but it was worth every penny we paid.
10.) Just drive 1000km through Iceland and find the Northern Lights
In addition to everything we posted above, Iceland offers views and mountains that seem lunar, something from another world, we were treated to the Aurora Borealis from the plane on the way to Budapest in Hungary. When God made Iceland, He did a great job! So just drive and stop for unforgettable photos.
We recommend at least 4 days for those who are fast, and 6 days for those who are slower to repeat our itinerary, we want to go back to go around the entire island, which is less than 500km.
